AIR FORCE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
The United States Air Force has the responsibility of managing more than nine million acres of valuable public lands. To ensure success, the Air Force has developed a network of dedicated professionals who work in coordination with local, regional and national authorities. Their challenge is to find a balance in requirements for military mission, security and environmental habitat protection. This effort requires the cooperation and support of the Air Force and its neighbors. The primary goal is to guarantee the quality of public lands under Air Force stewardship.
Conservation programs on Air Force bases include fish and wildlife conservation, forestry, agricultural land lease, habitat management and outdoor recreation. Air Force Resource Managers and nearby communities, working together, have made great strides in fostering environmental awareness through education and cooperation.
The Air Force supports partnerships with many resource groups; Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Ducks Unlimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Wetlands Protection and Enhancement and the National Watchable Wildlife program. DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, DELAWARE
Dover Air Force Base, established in 1941, is now home to the 436th and the 512th Airlift Wings. The C-5 Galaxy fleet of 38 of the country’s largest aircraft is based here. The mission of Dover AFB is to be recognized as a world class strategic mobility wing while providing the highest quality working and living environment for our people. We provide combat ready professionals and equipment to enhance rapid global mobility for America. The 512th Airlift Wing’s mission is to recruit, train, equip and retain a qualified force to augment major commands with people and units to support strategic airlift during peace or war. More than 8,000 military and civilian personnel support this mission.
Dover AFB is adjacent to the City of Dover, capitol of the state of Delaware since 1772. Its 3,908 acres support a large airfield complex. Natural areas on base are mainly grassland around these runways. Several unique grassland birds species, Short-eared Owl, Upland Sandpiper, Dickcissel and Grasshopper Sparrow are found here. Pipe Elm Branch runs into the site. St. Jones River, a large sandpit and several marshes abut base housing. There are also several woodlots, including a section of old growth timber with an immense Mazzard Cherry and a 240 year old Pignut Hickory.
