Department of Defense Sustainability Report and Implementation Plan FY 2020
The FY 2020 Sustainability Report and Implementation Plan describes how DoD’s sustainability program supports the National Defense Strategy by improving military readiness through resilient infrastructure and business reforms to increase efficiency and reduce costs. The Department leverages technology to create new and innovative solutions to existing and emerging human health and environmental challenges. It is important for the Department to safeguard personnel and protect the environment, all while increasing mission readiness, supporting alliances, and improving affordability.

Department of Defense Sustainability Report and Implementation Plan FY 2019
The FY 2019 Sustainability Report and Implementation Plan describes DoD’s support of EO 13834, Efficient Federal Operations, to “enhance the resilience of Federal infrastructure and operations and enable more effective accomplishment of its mission.” The Department’s sustainability efforts align with the National Defense Strategy by focusing on mission assurance, operational readiness, and cost-effective business practices. DoD’s Sustainability Program strives to maintain the ability of the Department to operate into the future without decline either in mission or in the natural and man-made systems that support it.

Department of Defense Sustainability Report and Implementation Plan FY 2018
The FY 2018 Sustainability Report and Implementation Plan describes DoD’s commitment to sustainability through FY 2025 and beyond. This DoD Sustainability Report and Implementation Plan describes ways the DoD is advancing its mission through resilient infrastructure and business practices that improve performance and affordability.

The FY 2016 update to the DoD SSPP describes DoD’s commitment to sustainability through FY 2025 and beyond.  The SSPP presents a progress update and the way forward across a framework of four sustainability objectives: continued availability of critical resources, readiness maintained in the face of climate change, waste and pollution minimized, and management and practices built on sustainability and community.

This annual update of the Department of Defense (DoD) Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP) establishes the path by which DoD will advance our mission by ensuring the longevity of critical resources; minimizing long-term costs; addressing environmental, safety, and occupational health considerations; and advancing technologies and practices that further the Department’s sustainability goals. The SSPP addresses climate change, which is having an impact on national security, whether by contributing to global instability, opening passages through the Arctic, or increasing sea level and storm surge near our coastal installations. We are actively integrating climate considerations across the full spectrum of our activities to ensure a ready and capable force. Our efforts will improve the resiliency of our fixed installations and further embed sustainability considerations into the conduct of DoD business.

This annual update of the DoD SSPP summarizes our approach to sustainability through FY 2020. It establishes the path by which DoD will advance our mission by ensuring the longevity of critical resources; minimizing long-term costs; addressing environmental, safety, and occupational health considerations; and advancing technologies and practices that further the Department’s sustainability goals.

This Roadmap sets forth planned activities that will increase the Department’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.  The Roadmap establishes three broad adaptation goals: 1) identify and assess the effects of climate change on the Department; 2) integrate climate change considerations across the Department and manage associated risks; and 3) collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on climate change challenges.

This annual update of the DoD SSPP articulates aggressive sustainability goals, especially for energy, water, and greenhouse gas emissions. The Plan focuses on maintaining mission capability by reducing energy costs and improving energy security for DoD’s fixed installations through energy efficiency and renewable energy.

This annual update of the DoD Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP) lays out our goals and sustainability performance expectations over the next decade, establishing the path by which the Department will enhance technologies and practices that further the sustainability goals of the Nation. The Department not only commits to complying with environmental and energy statutes, regulations, and Executive Orders, but to going beyond compliance where it serves national security needs.

The FY2011 annual update of the DoD Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan lays out DoD’s goals and sustainability performance expectations over the next decade, establishing the path by which the Department will enhance its ability to achieve the mission, lower life cycle costs, and advance technologies and practices that further the sustainability goals of the Nation. The Department not only commits to complying with environmental and energy statutes, regulations, and Executive Orders but to going beyond compliance where it serves our national security needs.

The mission of the Department of Defense (DoD) is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and protect the security of our country. This, our first Departmental sustainability plan, lays out our goals and performance expectations for the next decade, establishing the path by which DoD will serve as a model of sustainability for the nation while enhancing our ability to achieve our mission.
