About Base Realignment & Closure

Background

Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) is the process DoD uses to reorganize its installation infrastructure to more efficiently and effectively support its forces, increase operational readiness, and facilitate new ways of doing business. The BRAC process enables DoD to better match existing facilities to changing military requirements. Congress has authorized five rounds of BRAC: BRAC I in 1988, BRAC II in 1991, BRAC III in 1993, BRAC IV in 1995, and BRAC V in 2005.
